Washers
Washers have the name because they belong under every bolt connection. A washer distributes the pressure under the head of the bolt to such an extent that a flat pressure is created. Steel or stainless steel is always used in the production of washers.

Washers - DIN 125 did not exist in the past. Washers made of steel or stainless steel were used very late in the steel construction industry. In the beginning, the sole purpose was to produce bolted joints that could only connect components with each other. No more and no less. However, when it was quickly realised what could happen if washers were not placed underneath bolted joints, the stainless steel washer began its triumphal procession. Because a screw connection without a washer can have fatal consequences: Here, the screw head can quickly "eat" into the component or material due to the rotational movement (screw movement). As a result, the individual parts - here the screw head with the base material - weld together. The consequences are obvious. The surface of the screw head that has come into contact with the workpiece has changed the surface. The surface of the screw head (bottom side - contact surface) looks roughened and destroyed. The shims effectively prevent this "seizing" between the two materials. In this case the rotation is carried out on the washer, so that if a seizure should occur, the washer can simply be replaced. However, the component will not suffer any damage. Furthermore, the washer distributes the resulting very strong pressure evenly over the material. Especially when screwing soft material the washer is the first choice. These washers are used in all imaginable industries and can be found almost everywhere. Understandable - if you now know how important the little helpers are. Washers are always produced by punching as standard. There is an upper punch and a lower punch. In between there is the stainless steel plate which has to be punched. When punching the shims, the punching tools press against each other and press the sheet out. This creates the stainless steel washer which has a burr-free surface on the upper side and the underside of the washer can be burred. This is due to the punching process and the punching tool. For high quality machine parts, where an optical aspect is also important, laser cut washers should be used. If you want to learn more about stainless steel washers, please visit our blog.
